Biblical name vault - A place to explore the meaning and etymology of biblical names Comprehensive Aramaic Lexicon - This is a new dictionary of the Aramaic language currently in preparation (2010) by an international team of scholars, with headquarters at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. This major scholarly reference work will cover all dialects and periods of ancient Aramaic, one of the principal languages of antiquity, with a literature of central importance for history and civilization, and especially for the Jewish and Christian religions. What is Aramaic? - Aramaic is one of a group of Semitic languages that includes Arabic, Hebrew, Ethiopic, and Akkadian (ancient Babylonian and Assyrian). It is particularly closely related to Hebrew, and was written in a variety of alphabetic scripts. (What is usually called "Hebrew" script is actually an Aramaic script.)
Although Jesus spoke Aramaic, the Gospels are in Greek, and only rarely quote actual Aramaic words. Reconstruction of the Aramaic background of the Gospels remains a fascinating, but inordinately difficult area of modern research.
Christians in Palestine eventually rendered portions of Christian Scripture into their dialect of Aramaic; these translations and related writings constitute "Christian Palestinian Aramaic".
A much larger body of Christian Aramaic is known as Syriac, originally the literary language of the city of Edessa (now Urfa in SE Turkey), became the tongue of the entire eastern wing of the church, from about the third century C.E. down until well past the Muslim conquest.
Syriac writings include numerous Bible translations, the most important being the Peshitta (simple) translation. Almost all of the Greek philosophical and scientific tradition was eventually translated into Syriac, and it was through this channel that most found their way into the Islamic World and thence, into post-Dark Ages Europe.

A 30 10-minute video clips put together by "sundaiisy", including the Bill Moyers interview "On faith and Reason" Pema Chodron on bodhichitta: the awakened open heart-mind. - from “The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times.” Shambala 2001. Bodhichitta exists on two levels. First there is unconditional bodhichitta, an immediate experience that is refreshingly free of concept, opinion, and our usual all caught-up-ness. It’s something hugely good that we are not able to pin down even slightly, like knowing at gut level that there’s absolutely nothing to lose. Second there is relative bodhichitta, our ability to keep our hearts and minds open to suffering without shutting down.
Buddha, Avalokishvara and Shariputra with students on Vulture Peak Mountain. The teaching was on groundlessness. sunyata unconditional bodhichitta prajnaparamita Any description of reality is a trap. [cf the story of Krishnamurti and the Order of the Star]
On Vulture Peak, the Buddha was silent, as in deep meditation. Avalokiteshvara expressed his experience of prajnaparamita on behalf of the Buddha. The monk Shariputra questioned Avalokiteshvara on "how he saw clearly that everything was empty". He asked: “In all the words and actions and thoughts of my life, how do I apply the prajnaparamita? What is the key to training in this practice? What view do I take?” Avalokiteshvara answered, “Form is emptiness, emptiness also is form. Emptiness is no other than form, form is no other than emptiness.” Prajnaparamita is beginner's heart-mind, a state of basic intelligence-love that is open, questioning and unbiased... the immediacy of experience... understanding and loving the perfection of things just as they are... staying in touch with the heart-throbbing quality of being alive... there is no resting place at all... then we will have no fear. Om, gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi, svaha
Enlightenment is not the end of anything. Enlightenment, being completely awake, is just the beginning of fully entering into we know not what.
When the great bodhisattva finished teaching, the Buddha came out of his meditation and said, “Good, good! You expressed it perfectly, Avalokiteshvara.” And those in the audience who hadn’t walked out or died from heart attacks rejoiced. They rejoiced at hearing this teaching on stepping beyond fear.

Since then philosophy of biology has grown steadily, and is now at least as active an area of research as philosophy of physics. Reflection on this emerging knowledge is dramatically changing our views of, among many other basic questions, scientific method, causation, and (literally) the meaning of life. Philosophy of biology, therefore, has become an essential contributor both to our understanding of science, and to our general philosophical interpretation of the world. Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai (d. c. 85 ce) was one of the most influential figures in ancient Jewish history. Emerging from the ruins of the destroyed Temple, Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai led the Jewish people through the dangerous first years after the devastation of the last remnants of their state by the Romans. A disciple of Hillel, he was of the "national-realist" school that favored tactical surrender to the overwhelming power of the Roman Empire. In his most famous act, he arranged to fake his own death in order to escape his enemies among the Zealots to negotiate a peace treaty with Vespasian, who would later become Emperor. "Give me Yavneh and its scholars," asked Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai, setting in place the foundation for the existence of Judaism after the Temple could no longer serve as the center of Jewish religious life.
